Retail Giant Simons Opening Second Location in Londonderry Mall

With 177 years of superior fashion, great value and exceptional shopping experience, Simons retail chain, lead by brothers Peter and Richard Simons, will be opening an 88,000 sq ft. two-level second location this August 2017 in Edmonton, Alberta at the Londonderry Mall.  Simons offers an extensive and fashion forward collection of its own exclusive and innovative private label brands for men, and women, complimented by a selection of national brands, and a collection of international designers making it well known for its varied selection of merchandise for everyone.  Simons also carries home fashion and decor for the bedroom, bathroom and the kitchen.

Fashion has been their passion since 1840.  A uniquely different and inspiring fashion retailer, they are known for offering the most sought-after styles and looks from the world’s design capitals.  “For five generations we have been renowned for our devotion to customer care.  Today our more than dozen stores are a dazzling tribute to architecture, art, attentive service, and to a shopping experience second to none.” says Richard Simons.

The Simons story began in 1812 when Peter Simons arrived from Scotland and settled on a small farm near Quebec city to raise his family.  In 1840 his son John moved into the city and opened up a small shop where he sold dry goods and various imported wares.  He made over 70 Atlantic crossings to Europe on ship, to emphasize a quality merchandise.  In 1870 John Simons moved his shop to where it currently remains, as well as the head offices.  Through the years they have opened numerous stores all across Canada, with the opening of the West Edmonton Mall location in October of 2012 marking the first time Simons opened a location outside of Quebec.  And, with the Londonderry Mall location it will be the first time Simons will operate a second location in the same city outside of Quebec.

Wanting to build a quality organization in the long term, they are looking at growth not as expansion but as longevity for the company.  “We have a long term perspective, it’s not just about next year, it’s about building a greater company.”  Peter Simons, CEO said.  “It’s not about building a big company either.  I really want to try to do something here in Canada.  There are less and less retailers, we are probably the oldest family run company in the country, and I’m hoping to build a quality organization on the long term.”.

Simons’ new store will feature the addition of one of the largest solar-electric systems in a retail store in Canada, which includes 700 solar-electric modules on the parking lot and 1100 modules on the roof.  The solar energy canopy in the parking lot will also protect customers and their vehicles from the elements.  The combined solar-electric system will generate 470,000 kWh per year (equivalent to 65 homes), and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 300 tonnes per year.  As well, electric car charging stations will be available in the adjacent parking lot.

“With Edmonton being one of the sunniest cities in Canada, Londonderry was a natural testing ground for the latest in solar-electric technology.”  said Jordan Adams, General Manager of Londonderry shopping centre.  “Simons is leading the way in leveraging innovation to create new standards for sustainability in retail and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them to bring visibility to solar technologies in Canada.”

Londonderry mall has recently undergone a massive 130 million dollar redevelopment project, encompassing full renovation of all mall common areas, the addition of new retailers as well as a   lighting upgrade and a state of the art surveillance system.  Londonderry mall now boasts 150 shops and services and has been the shopping destination of the North side since it opened in 1972.
