Edmonton Police Service are investigating an early-morning apartment fire in the Terrace Heights neighbourhood that some residents suspect was an act of arson.
Just after 5 am, an explosion was heard at the building at 7314 101 Avenue. But due to the quick actions of some residents who heard the blast, everyone managed to escape to safety without injury. Some residents barely had time to escape with only the clothes on their backs.
Firefighters arrived to a fully engulfed building. It was still smouldering during the lunch hour as crews worked to knock down the remaining structure due to safety concerns.
Only half of the building’s fourteen suites were occupied. Police say they have been called out to the building before.
One resident said there was a disturbance at the building last week involving one of the tenants. There are reports that a smoke bomb or some other kind of incendiary device may have been involved, setting off an explosion.
The Red Cross is now helping to house the displaced residents for the next few days until they can find new accommodation.
Police and fire investigators will remain on the scene gathering evidence.
