For the first time in Edmonton’s history, there will be a high rise standing 16 storeys tall just off of Old Strathcona’s Whyte Avenue.
Despite the community’s backlash on the whole idea, and prior to City Council’s approval to change the zoning of the area where the building will be built, the highest allowed height of a building in the area was 6 storeys. Many think this gave the area a better historic look and feel, and are not happy with the changes heading that way.
It’s bound to happen though. Edmonton is growing, and areas near the center of the city will continue to expand upwards whenever possible. This is just one of the many changes to come, I’m sure.
However, it is a rather congested area as is, and I foresee trouble with parking once the building is completed. Hopefully underground parking for the building is enough to accommodate all those residing in the building. Speaking of which, there will be 200 apartments.
