Former Oilers Player Dave Semenko Passes Away at Age 59

Sad day for Oiler Nation as revered Dave Semenko passes away at the age of 59. Born David John Semenko on July 12, 1957, and considered as the bodyguard to Wayne Gretzky, passed away after a battle of cancer.

In 1977 he was selected by the Minnesota North Stars of the NHL and the Houston Aeros of the WHL. Considered as one of the tough guys, Sammy (as he was called by his fans and team mates) joined Wayne Gretzky in 1978 until he was traded to Hartford in 1986.

He won two Stanley Cups in 1984 and 1985. In 575 NHL games, Sammy finished his career with 65 goals, 153 points and 1,175 in penalty points.

As a hot topic on sports talk shows, his dedicated fans always stood up for him. Grandma Olga Stark would always phone into the John Short show as soon as she heard any bad or rude comments about Sammy and defended him furiously. Now they can sit up there together and talk about those good ole days.

Oilers nation and the hockey community have lost a man known for his kindness, wit and humour.

I, along with many others, send our deepest condolences to the family of Dave Semenko. *Once an Oiler, Always an Oiler*. Rest in peace, gentle soul.
