The End is Near – Sears Closing 59 Canada Locations; 2,900 Jobs Lost

The inevitable is happening. Sears Canada has announced earlier this morning that it will be closing 59 of its Canadian based locations in an attempt to pick themselves up from a business that has been struggling for quite some time now. 2,900 Sears employees are expected to lose their job. 20 of the locations are full-line, 15 are Sears Home stores, 10 are Sears Outlet stores, and the remaining 14 are Sears Hometown locations.

It is unclear as to when these 59 locations will be closing their doors, but it is expected to be in the not-so-distant future. Sears has recently attempted to place more focus on their online e-commerce side of business, however they did also attempt a “Sears 2.0” remodeling of some of their retail locations as well recently, and they didn’t do so well either.

Sears Canada Inc. (TSE: SCC) stock value went from over $40 a share in the year 2000, down to just over $10 a share in early 2016, to what it sits at today; $0.62 per share. It just goes to show how steadily this company’s value has been crashing.

You can expect heavy liquidation sales to be announced in the coming days, so get ready to save a few bucks, while at the same time, help save Sears Canada a few bucks in the impending bankruptcy.

I would just like to make it very clear that Sears warranties on appliances, mattresses, etc. will remain valid and in effect for the time being, despite the mass-closure.

To all those who are losing their jobs, full-timers and part-timers alike, we’re sorry to learn and share about this news. It was imminent though, and we do hope that the remainder of the Sears Canada employees do consider looking for a new job as well.
