Looking for some Canadian-based inspiration? Look no further than Vancouverite Tara Bosch.
CANADIAN INSPIRATION — Tara Bosch, just 21 years young, is the incredibly inspiring founder of her SmartSweets candies. The candy that she created boasts almost no sugar. Just 2 grams per bag, to be exact.
This is a feat that many have attempted, but ultimately failed. At least 99% of candies on the market today rely solely on sugar for their sweet tastes, but that is not the case with SmartSweets.
Bosch has always been an entrepreneur at heart. [In her past] she has gotten some of her friends to open up lemonade stands and then kept 50% of the profits for helping them get started. She sold vinyl-backed chalkboards and whiteboards that adhered to walls without damaging them, and now this, her biggest and best business idea yet.
Last year, she was a [fourth-year student] at the University of B.C. taking counselling psychology and literature. Upon noticing that this business was taking off faster than she could handle, she made the decision to drop out of university so that she could focus more of her time on SmartSweets.
Bosch has changed the game with her innovative candy product, and she’s done it right here at home, on Canadian soil. She is based out of Vancouver, BC.

Instead of using sugar to sweeten her SmartSweets Gummy Bears – her first and only product release to date, she uses a custom made stevia formula. Because of this, prior to its name change in January of this year, Bosch’s candy company used to be named SteviSweets.
What is stevia?
Stevia is a low-glycemic sweetener extracted from leaves of the Stevia Rebaudiana plant. It provides great tasting calorie-free sweetness and is what replaces sugar in SmartSweets.SmartSweets.com
The SmartSweets Gummy Bears were just officially launched on store shelves and made available for order online on July 14th – just four days ago as of this writing.
The idea behind SmartSweets began just one year ago, and is already available on at least 13 retail store shelves in Bosch’s home city of Vancouver.

Customers are very pleased with the Gummies:
This product is exceptional! I have a big love of gummy candy but sugar has been my deterrent. By switching to SmartSweets, I have not given up flavour, texture or any of the goodness that comes along with a traditional candy. In fact, these taste better and are so much healthier.Krystal McLennan
Growing up I developed an unhealthy relationship with food. My self esteem and body image were affected by my relationship with food, driving me to a restrictive diet. As I got older, it became apparent that healthy relationships in all aspects of life come from smarter choices. It was this very life lesson paired with my love for candy that inspired my quest to create SmartSweets. — Tara Bosch

When attempting to get in contact with Tara Bosch regarding this article, she was not available for chat, despite her website’s ‘live chat’ feature stating that she was ‘online’. To be fair, she’s probably incredibly busy with her growing business.
Edit: This article was edited with Bosch’s correct age. A prior version stated that she was 22 years of age. She is 21 years old. My apologies, Tara.
